meet the summer food editor: sarah flotard
Jun 18, 2010
Sarah and I met on our very first day of college, when we were randomly paired together as freshman roommates. The first meals we ever made together were on a hot pot in our eensy dorm room. After college, we traveled cross-country together in a wood-paneled station wagon, making dinners on our trusty propane grill, in campgrounds from the Black Hills to Bryce Canyon. After we settled in San Francisco, Sarah went on to develop cocktail recipes for Stirrings, and then work for the James Beard award-winning chef Tom Douglas in Seattle.
Sarah and I share the belief that everything tastes better when eaten outside. And the belief that owning a home with an outdoor shower is the true mark of success.
She makes everything more fun. And makes everything taste better.

I too am a transplanted Vermonter - I have lived in the UK for the last 16 years and always, always, always, get a hankering for my childhood summers at this time of year. We played simple, honest games that required very little financial outlay. I waited for the sound of the mailman delivering another issue of a magazine that I can no longer remember the name of - it was just for kids and I loved it. We swam in the river and when my dad had more time from his farming duties, we floated around the ponds and lakes for lazy afternoons. I too have decided I am claiming back my summer - just for the joy of seeing if it is possible and to make sure my three kids get to experience it. The challenge is whether I can do it on English soil.......
I always think that food that I haven't cooked tastes better too.
We've discussed putting in an outdoor shower when we move into our new house in a few weeks, but I don't think it will happen. A new non-leaking shower INSIDE seems slightly more important. : )
What a sweet introduction. I'm inspired to cook and eat outside more this summer. Wish I had a gas grill. Oh, and my parents do have a very bare bones outdoor shower, as they live quite near the beach, and it is a true summer pleasure--my boys adore it and I can't say as I blame them.
I walk behind my ridiculously talented sister's cooking like a hoover.
She affectionately calls me "The Locust". Thank GOD for Make Grow Gather, and this platform to share her culinary flare.
So excited to be following you this summer. About to take on a few new projects, inspired by the MGG crew. Please please more more!
